Mea Culpa
Tuesday, 03 March 2009

I realize that my posting here has been sporadic at best. I've been seemingly, or effectively, gone from the site for ages. That's not because I don't love you. It's also not because I don't love spewing opinions, and occasional insights, on user experience and information architecture. It's mostly because I've been busy.

Busy learning lots of lessons. And busy forming lots of new opinions. And maybe even busy gaining some new insights into the product development process.

But now, I'm back. And I'll be sharing all of those lessons, opinions and insights with you over the coming months. Maybe my latest batch of experiences will save some of you a lot of pain.

Because I'm just that selfless, and that's exactly how much I love you--I'll take all of that pain for you, and come back and tell you how to avoid it for yourselves. You can thank me later.

Article: Dex fUX!

We're all very aware of my tendency for using, um, colorful analogies and my lack of shyness in littering the landscape around me with f-bombs. In the spirit of that, I offer you the first in what should be (at the very least) an interesting set of presentations showcasing my opinions on what's wrong with how most people address (or don't address) user experience.

Article: The Importance of Being...Big?
Friday, 21 November 2008

Recently, I read the following: “Think about it…does Starbucks really need to be worried about their website?”

My answer: Fuck yeah, they do!

Legal Schmegal

So, someone finally rang the bell on that whole "illegal to incentivize voting" thing. Awesome. Stay tuned for thoughts on why you shouldn't leave all of your thinking to ad agencies--or Why You're Smarter Than You Think You Are.

In the meantime, you should go hit up Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, Krispy Kreme, and whomever else was offering up freebies in your 'hood and demand your free shit. Srsly.

Blog: How cheap is your vote?
Monday, 03 November 2008
I've been long absent from here, I know. That's changing soon enough. Promise. :-)

But for now, I've put together a short list of ways that marketers and advertising agencies have decided to bribe you into voting tomorrow. You can find them over in the blog...

Article: Tripping On Your Own Dick
Wednesday, 14 November 2007

Are you the business driver for a software product? How many times have you bemoaned how the product development team doesn't know what they're doing? But, is it them...or is it you?

Blog: Prototyping for non-coders...
Tuesday, 06 November 2007

I'm always on the lookout for easier ways to include rich interaction mechanisms and effects in my prototypes. For the past year or so, that meant wrestling with various libraries like MooTools, Prototype, Scriptaculous, and (horror of horrors) Dojo. But now, there's something easier.

Wednesday, 24 October 2007

Good design makes my teeth sweat. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about software or a coat hanger, if it’s done well and with a purpose, I’m bound to be hooked.

Article: False Prophets and Imposter Messiahs
Tuesday, 23 October 2007

"So now the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you." - 1 Kings 22:23 (NIV)

Software development will not bring you salvation. So, don't treat your development methodology like a religion. Read more in False Prophets and Imposter Messiahs

dexocratic revolution - user experience architecture

dexWho is Dex?
A user experience architect in the rainy Pacific northwest who can regularly be found in various coffee shops drinking (double grande non-fat) lattes, whipping Visio into a wireframing and flowcharting frenzy while debating, discussing, and pondering the triumphs and challenges of information architecture, user interface design, usabilty and user experience in an ever-changing technology driven marketplace.

Random Thoughts...

on simplicity...The simple approach: It's about the right person finding the right information at the right time.

on convincing tech wonks that IA is valuable...IA is what happens between the database and the user interface. Before someone can create the data model, you must know how your users want to use the data, or risk creating a system the users won't accept.

on being informed...If you can't make a decision, it's probably because you lack information.
